Daily News Indonesia – Actually, the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) is ready for a soft launch, along with the semi-finas and final of the International Youth Football (IYF) tournament on December 11, 2001. Unfortunately, due to the Omicron pandemic, the international IYF event was postponed.
But, why other international and colossal events keep going according to schedule in the country, netizens and all of us are now questioning.
The sudden cancellation of the match raised more questions than explanations. Rumours soon spread: some were worried that the event would become the momentum to further strengthen Anies’ personal name with a view to his chance in the forthcoming presidential election in 2024. Various recent surveys further confirm the name of the Governor of Jakarta, the best presidential candidate for the people’s choice in the 2024 presidential election are worrisome.
Whether it is true or not, you might need to check it with the one who gives the instructions. What is certain is that it is not only football fans in the country who feel deeply disappointed. Without political pretensions, we should be able to watch world-class matches, where the national team would also compete. The Balinese people also do not need to lose the economic benefits in the international competition, as tourism sector is their main lifeline. In fact, Bali wants to promote itself to the world.
If true, because of the reason that behind IYF and the venue for the football competition is the name of Anies Baswedan. This name is so scary to them. Anies’ enemies envisage the IYF and JIS would catapult o Anieschance as the most feasible and smart future leader to succeed Jokowi as President of the Republic of Indonesia.
Why they are so paranoid as if they are facing a ‘nightmare’, scenario?
But within the framework of soft-launching JIS the show must go on. Anies has an excellent advisory team in all fields, including in the application of advanced technology, in particular such as JIS project in the construction technology.
Therefore, it is beyond a sense of nationalism and national pride to hand over jobs in a simple smelter project to foreign workers, underestimating the quality of local workers and closing job opportunities for Indonesian workers.
If the netizen’s speculation is true, then it is evident how dangerous it is if leaders suffer from the ‘short-sightedness in the soul of that causes fear and paranoia.
Dwarf type of leadership would easily put aside and even pawn nationalism and national pride which are not comparable to the sense of victory because they manage to block Anies’ appearance on the national political stage through this international event.
In fact, holding the IYF at JIS will open the eyes of the world, that Indonesia as the host will prove its success in overcoming Covid-19 and Omicron, and now is ready to host trade and investment opportunities.
The IYF event would become ‘a show case’. Indonesia already has a FIFA standard stadium and applies the latest technology to rank it into a world’s best stadium. The world also needs to know what the situation is like in Jakarta, which has been transformed into a beautiful, comfortable and safe city, as a national pride under Anies leadership.
In facts, JIS itself has received very little attention from the mainstream media. It seems Anies working out JIS and various facilities is in silence. There is no need for the frenetic and fake imagery discourse, said netizens. Now, a more complete information on the progress of the project is available on Youtube.
This magnificent stadium has now existed in Jakarta, with a capacity of 82 thousand spectators, an integrated public transportation system to overcome congestion, with various functional facilities. Anies did not build a ‘sand castle on the beach’ with a fata morgana and mere imagery.
Certified by FIFA, JIS is also equipped with the highest class of platinum building certificate, a combination of natural and synthetic grass to prevent pests, a very large prayer room, adequate sanitary facilities. JIS will provide opportunities for hosting various functions.
Various events can be held at JIS at any time regardless of time and weather because it has a ventilation system and windows on the roof that can be opened and closed automatically.
It is this opening and closing ventilation system that will be the special highlight of this article. This system is not only the largest in its class and the construction process uses advanced technology.
Built under, the roof has the largest span in the world measuring 267 meters long, 245 meters wide in one frame. with a weight of 3,900 tons, and then lifted simultaneously up, on the roof. The work, which relies on a high level of precision, was successfully completed by Indonesian engineers.
Nationalism: source of Anies inspiration
It turns out, nationalism is our source of inspiration and national pride that must be applied at every opportunity. With that spirit, all stages of stadium development, from planning, design and construction process in early 2019 are carried out.
Even though Covid-19 was starting to threaten, Anies was determined to complete JIS construction by the end of 2021. It is proven, in two years of construction, the JIS project was completed and ready to be inaugurated for its use.
The day before the planned schedule for lifting the 3900 ton roof to the roof, Jakarta-owned regional enterprise PT Jakpro together with the Young Engineers Forum – Indonesian Engineers Association (FIM-PII) held a zoom meeting to discuss the technical aspects of lifting the roof of the JIS project through an online seminar, Friday night ( 9/7/2021).
“In order for the construction to run according to the target time, all friends in the field such as consultants, contractors continue to collaborate to find solutions to overcome this challenge,” said Iwan from Jakpro when opening the webinar with the topic “Jakarta International Stadium: 3,900 ton Roof Lifting Technology”.
JIS development is a strategic project in Jakarta and even for Indonesia. That is why, the strategy for implementing its development must also be with a major strategic breakthrough, for example, utilizing digitalization technology. This technology really helps Jakpro to be more effective, efficient, and transparent in carrying out each stage of work in real time with the help of a building information modelling (BIM) system.
With this digitization, documentation of JIS development from the planning, execution, to maintenance process is carried out in a transparent and accountable manner. Jakpro is the first pioneer in the use of BIM in the field of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) which is able to simulate all information in a development project into a three-dimensional model.
In this case, the construction of JIS also made history for the world of construction and infrastructure in Indonesia, especially in the construction of a steel roof truss with a weight of 3,900 tons and the largest span in Asia and even the world, by being assembled below and simultaneously lifted up.
Anies with high nationalism believes that this massive project can be carried out 100% by Indonesian engineers. Because this is a project worth a bit more than IDR 4 trillion, it is being carried out by Indonesian project leader and engineers as well as workers.
Anies believes that with 100% Indonesian planners, engineers, and workers they are even able to produce new standards of technology, rather than simply handing them over to foreign companies and engineers. He succeeded in proving the quality of the work of the sons of the nation who proved that they were not only capable but could outperform the work of foreign companies.
How is the process of elevating the giant roof?
“Eight main pillars with 16 points must be lifted synchronously in a computerized manner every five milli meters until they reach a height of 96 meters,” said Heru, chairman of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII).
He appreciated the success of the JIS roof truss elevation series carried out by the team without a hitch. This success is also a monumental work of civil engineering in Indonesia which requires a high level of expertise and professionalism.
“This is a historic moment because JIS is among the 10 largest stadiums in the world, at least according to the UK-based Media Daily Mail,” said Heru.
JIS has now been able to align itself with the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium owned by the Spanish capital club Real Madrid which also uses the equally roof-opening structure as JIS. The difference is, the weight of the roof of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Madrid, is only 700 tons and the lifting is done in stages.
“What makes JIS special is the use of the largest and heaviest open-close space truss roof structure in Asia and even the world. This heavy lifting is the best achievement of Indonesian engineers,” he explained.
In the webinar that night (9/6) the speakers consisted of M Rizky Fauzi, Project Construction Manager for the Jakarta International Stadium and Arga Frandsiska.
According to M Rizky Fauzi, the lifting process of the 3,900 ton roof truss which is 270 meters long can be lifted up to a height of 70 meters simultaneously.
JIS is now an object of learning for the construction world as well as an academic study at the Faculty of Engineering in Indonesia. JIS has become a benchmark for stadium development in Indonesia in the future.
Technical not political jargon
Because of his admiration for the engineer of the nation who was responsible for the construction of JIS, after his interview with Governor Anies Baswedan about various records – including the JIS world record – on the ‘DisWay’ podcast, former Minister Dahlan Iskan wrote his notes in his article ‘Technical Language’, Thursday, December 9, 2021.
In the podcast session, Dahlan is interested in discussing how Governor Anies carried out his vision to make JIS the best stadium in the world. Therefore, Dahlan visited JIS, to witness one aspect of JIS splendid, namely the technology of opening and closing the roof to take place at any time and regardless of the weather.
What attracted Dahlan the most, as he revealed in the article, was how the technique of installing the roof of the JIS stadium, which broke the world record, was carried out by 100% Indonesian engineers.
“If the roof is done conventionally – built on top of the building construction – it will take up to 6 months, then the finalization target will be delayed.
“In the Real Madrid stadium renovation experience, the roof is divided by 4, each weighing 800 tons. Then, the 4 pieces of the roof were lifted and assembled on top. But JIS uses a wider, heavier, size simultaneously,” Dahlan noted admiringly.
The Indonesian engineers were challenged to break the record and agreed to lift the entire roof – and the largest span in Asia and even the world with a length of 267 meters, a width of 245 meters and a weight of 3,900 tons – in one frame.
“The expanse of the roof is so wide, already assembled solidly below, and will be lifted simultaneously. This has never happened anywhere before,” Dahlan wrote.
“Because it is more sophisticated and is the best stadium in its class, National Geographic magazine is interested in recording the implementation of the idea at the Jakarta stadium. And will broadcast on his channel,” Dahlan noted.
The stadium construction has 8 main pillars of 6 meters in diameter, round and sturdy, 70 meters high. It is on the 8 main pillars that the entire roof will rest, assisted by 64 smaller pillars.
At the top of the 8 main pillars, a steel frame as high as 6 meters is added as the center of the roof hoist. The steel pole is the center of hoisting the roof frame which is mounted hydraulically at the top, to pull the ‘rope’ – which is made of steel wire (slink).
“When finished assembling the roof below – after the roof frame is finished – tied at 8 edges. Each place is tied with two ropes to guarantee in case one is broken and the other is still intact. The 16 thread rope is pulled to the 8 tops of the main pole,” Dahlan noted.
Breathtaking event: D-Day
The next day (10/6) after the project manager’s technical meeting with experts and engineers, on June 10, 2021, started with pulling the sling.
All hearts beat. The supervisor at 8 poles looked nervous. Sensors that monitor movement at the end of the pole are working, noted Dahlan, who was specifically present at the historic event.
“One day we only lifted 1 meter high,” said Ir Iwan Takwin, project director from Jakpro. Iwan graduated from UGM, came from Makassar.
For this reason, it is necessary to prove that the entire roof can be lifted simultaneously, and at the same time to ensure that the connection of the framework is not problematic, try to lift it as high as 1 meter.
“The 1 meter high position was left overnight. If it is safe it will be raised as high as another 1 meter. To raise 1 meter takes 2 hours. Even though the roof frame must be raised as high as 70 meters.”
On the 7th day, then the steel frame was successfully superimposed on the top of the 8 main pillars. At the same time the other 64 poles were put atop. The technical team and engineers are relieved. The world record has been broken, notes Dahlan.
“We are happy, it is like we have won an international tournament,” chuckled Iwan.
It was dusk. The lights were starting to come on. I went home, said Dahlan.
Now the JIS roof has been installed. Not completely, because the middle part that can be opened and closed is still yet not installed. The open-close ‘window’ is made of membrane. The grass has also been installed. The Boyolali grass mixed with 5 percent synthetic grass has been grown.
“Liverpool stadium artificial grass only 3 percent,” said Iwan.
Iwan’s team was actually programmed for a comparative study to the new stadiums of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Unfortunately the pandemic was still threatening. Ivan just succeeded, watching the two stadiums, virtually, online,” he said.
“Of course I’m also reviewing it. Including the VVIP room fitted with bullet-proof glass like in Jakarta. Because to guarantee the highest level of security, the presidential security team has checked the level of reliability.”
“The jogging track around the stadium which is on the roof has not been completed. I want to come here again next month. Want to know what it’s like. It’s only 3 meters wide. The length is around the stadium: almost 2 km,” wrote Dahlan.
Dahlan did not forget to make notes about the fate of 600 families who were evicted from the JIS location. Within the JIS complex. They used to live in illegal buildings along the railroad tracks. Now they are gone. The area is clean.
“For 135 families, flats are built near the stadium. They will work in that stadium. The rest are looking for a place to live on their own,” Dahlan noted.
“When I was there, a light test was being carried out which shone onto the green field. There is also a sound system test which is also entertaining. Many songs were played loudly, including Indonesia Raya and Western songs.”
“This article is my retribution for the engineers on that project. They have made living literature for everyone – especially students and lecturers at the Faculty of Engineering,” concluded Dahlan Iskan.
